The owners have lives that Dreams are made of...American buffalo,Tweeds and The Dark Horse Catering business. The food,incomparable just like the building it's in:The rooms are above the bar & restaurant, which is a long narrow room with its large magnificent original mahogany bar that is reported to date back to the 1893 Chicago Columbian Worlds Fair. Filled with artifacts from Riverhead?s heyday, the restaurant is handsomely furnished with comfortable armchairs, Victorian style lighting fixtures hanging from the original tin ceiling, and a working oak fireplace mantel from a mansion in Charleston, South Carolina. It is reminiscent of the Victorian style restaurants of a hundred years ago.
Because Riverhead is the County Seat, the hotel and bar were frequented by important politicians, especially from New York City, such as Charles Murphy, head of Tammany Hall, and Boss Tweed. J.J. Sullivan held Tammany card #1 and died tending bar in 1947. The restaurant and hotel played an important role in the political intrigue for over 100 years. The owner?s research says that the hotel was known as the Tammany Hall of the County Seat.Tweed's has a vintage and inviting feel..
The large bison head hanging above the bar is rumored to be the last bison ? or ? hunted by Teddy Roosevelt in the Dakota Badlands. This particular decoration comes as no surprise. The Proud present-day proprietor Edwin Fishel Tuccio, who owns a nearby bison farm. (It's not Tuccio's bison you'll be eating, however, since he raises his herd for breeding purposes only.) Tweed's menu offers bison dishes ranging from bison steak salad to bison chili and the basic ?Tweed's Bison.? Bison meat is said to have a hardy flavor similar to beef, only sweeter, and is often cited as a healthier alternative. Tweed's executive chef, Jeffrey Trujillo, says, ?Buffalo is extremely lean, high in iron and lower in fat and cholesterol than boneless, skinless chicken meat.? He refers to it as ?the other red meat.?

Wonderful Music on the weekends,please call ahead!!Tweed's boasts a large selection of local wines and serves local beers on tap. On Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons guests are treated to live music, usually jazz or classical piano.

A note about the Chef:Mr. Trujillo is a native Long Islander whose parents and brother are active in the local fishing industry. He began his culinary career washing dishes at a Hamptons restaurant and worked his way up, eventually graduating from The Culinary Institute of America and working in New York City as well as on Long Island. He has worked for many prominent chefs in the last 25 years, including Daniel Bolud and Craig Claiborne
